WOMEN CRY IN VAIN
MIRACLE DID NOT OCCUR
NAPLES, Dec. 17. Women and children wailed and lamented in the streets of Naples to-day, waiting for u miracle which tailed to occur.
St. .laiiuarius, a fourth century martyr, is buried in Naples Cathedral.
Every year on December 16, says legend, the blood of the saint, preserved in a small phial in the cathedral, liquefies, portending prosperity and good luck for tlm eily in t he coming year. The “Aunts of St. Jnnuarius*” an organisation of poor, pious people, entered the cathedral this morning, and a priest plant'd the. sacred relic beside a silver bust of the saint.
For hours Hie women watched and prayed. Outside other women and children knelt in the street and on the cathedral steps. Louder and louder rose their cries and lamentations as the hours passed.
It was of no avail, and this is interpreted as a had omen. Many a simple Neapolitan to-night, is glancing up at Vesuvius with fear in liis heart.
