PRESSURE OF LEAGUE
DANZIG "SURRENDER"
\NTHOXY EDEN'S TACT
LONDON PRESS COMMENT
(British Official Wireless.)
Reed. J p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 20. The Foreign .Secretary, Mr Anthony Eden, arrived in London to-night from Geneva where the Council, last. night, concluded its session with the adoption of two reports on the Danzig question and the dispute between Russia and Uruguay.
Newspapers print messages from thcTr Geneva correspondents describing the feeling of optimism engendered 'by the successful settlement of these two difficult questions. The successes are regarded as a triumph for the League method of peaceful discussion and persuasion. Congratulations generally are offered to Mr Eden for the part he played as rapporteur on the Danzig question, except in the Daily Mail and the Daily Express where, for some days, his participation in the League's efforts lis find a solution has been severely criticised.
The Times say.-- that the new accord over Danzig is due directly to Mr Men's tact and perseverance and replies directly to attacks in isolationist, papers, as does .also the NewsChronicle in a leading 'article commending the policy Mr Eden lias- followed as rapporteur. The Daily Herald draws from, the incident the moral: "When the League ads firmly it is successful and becomes stronger for its success."
The Birmingham Post is of the opinion thai the "surrender" of the Danzig Senate to League pressure may prove to foe an event of European importance; and concludes, that ivhile it is too early to say that this Danzig settlement is a "decisive battle," it is not too early to liope it will prove so.
