The home team won the toss and batted. Rowan and Coon, displaying aggressiveness, put on 44 in the first Half hour. Mitchell also forsook his customary caution, scoring brightly. The features of the innings were the success of O'Reilly's leg trap, which claimed live victims, and the line keeping of Rarnett, who did not concede a single bye. After losing Brown and Richardson the Australians completely mastered the Transvaal bowling, boundaries coming more frequently than singles. Fingletoti and Darling added ICO in 62 minutes and continued to punch the tired bowling until stumps. Scores were:
