WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING SMALL BUSINESS LIST The first meeting of the new year was held on Tuesday by the Waiapu County Council. There, was a full attendance of councillors and the chairman, Cr. D. W. W. Williams, was in the chair. There was only a small business list. A letter from the organiser of the Mayor of Auckland's fund for crippled children .slated that lie is endeavoring to raise a portion of the £15,000 required to enable the property oil'ered by Mr. and Mrs. R. W. Wilson to be endowed and equipped. The co-opera-tion of the council was asked and various methods were suggested for the raising of local funds. The general opinion, of members was that the council should continue to support only the New Zealand {society, and, on the motion of Cr. F. Jefferd," it was decided to reply to this effect. Further discussion developed, and the chairman moved that the county clerk should make out subscription lists to be sent throughout the. county to raise funds to assist the New Zealand society. The motion was carried.
METALLING AND HIGHWAYS Correspondence from Mr. J. Walker dealt with the metalling of his. road near Uuatoria and asked for information regarding its progress.—lt was decided, on the motion of the chairman, tb reply that although the council had applied for a grant, it had not. been made available. Nothing could be> done at present, but the application for the grant would be renewed. Mr. i'.. McClutchie wrote inquiring what could be done to metal the Mahora road now that the road was completed to Reporua.—The payment of rates on this section was discussed and, on the motion of Or. Ilyland, it was decided to reply that the council was keeping the matter in view, but- could tlo nothing before March 31. The .Mam Highways Board advised that the re-arrangement of the mam Highway between Keedy's-Kotokautukn-Jiuatona had been adopted and gazetted.
'J lio district engineer, Mr. O. G. fhonilon, wrote asiting if the council required to have the old road at the junction of. the Waiapu inland ami iokomaru-Aiata roads closed.—lt was decided to reply, oh the motion of Or. ,J. Busby, that the road was not wanted and could be closed.
BEPLY TO REPRESENTATIONS In his capacity of Minister of Native Allans', tlie Hon. M. •). Savage wrote m reference to the council s representa.aons in regard to the payment of rates out of pooling schemes, slating that the position wouid be looked inio. The Minister also stated that the question of the collection of native rates would Le investigated. A letter {rom Messrs. Nolan and Skeet stated that they had received notice from the registrar of the Native Laud Court advising that steps were being taken to place on the market all blocks for which receivership orders nave been made. This referred to the enforcing of rate charging orders.—The chairman stated that there were aboul a dozen such properties. The letter was received.
