A progress report on the work of draining the Taupiri Swamp shows that two drag-line dredges have deepened and widened the Mangnwara Stream, the main outlet for the area, as far as Williams' Bridge, Oriui. Work is being continued by tne dredges further upstream. A small gang of men is working in the Mangawara Stream beyond its junction with the Paranui drain. Willow clearing has been earned out, and other impediments in the flow of the stream have been removed. Top lift work bv hand labour in the Tauhei Stream "is almost completed. proposed to emplov a drag-line dretlge to remove the bottom lift, in the. Tauhei above Crockett's Bridge, Jon the Tauhei-Orini road. The eastern outlet is one of the largest artificial drains on the swamp. It extends from Motumaoho to Tauhei. For a distance of six miles the drain has been opened out and a second lift has been removed. Work has been continued on the upper section of the northern 'outlet in which the top lift has. been removed. The lake outlet has been widened and cleaned throughout its whole length, and two deviations have been made to facilitate the passage of the water and the drainage of the adjoining land. Excellent work has been done by a log hauler in removing heavy willows from the course of the Komakorau Stream at Cordonton, and a great improvement has been effected in the drainage Of , the area. Bund labour is employed in removing small obstructions in the .stream.
The longest drain in the area, the central drain, has been widened and deepened for a distance of nine miles, 10 chains. Further deepening lias been done for a length of four miles. There are 120 men employed on the Taupiri drainage scheme, which is two-thirds completed.
