EMBARGO ON POTATOES

DESIRE FOR REMOVAL Speaking at an inspection of the Department of . Agriculture's potato certification trials at Woodend, near Christchurch, this week, Mr. C. M. Williams, M.P. for Kaiapoi, referred to the embargo on the export of potatoes to Australia. He said he had been told to whisper in the ear of the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Industries and Commerce, that retaliation by an embargo on oranges from New South Wales would not be effective, as the opposition to the import of New Zealand potatoes came from Melbourne. If, however, the duty were removed from Californian fruits, which entered into competition with dried fruit from Victoria, said Mr. Williams, there would be more chance of the embargo on potatoes being lifted. He said there might be something in this advice, which he intended to pass on.
