Automatic Record
THE "speed synch milometer" is a novel combination of clock mechanism and speedometer which has been produced by a British firm, primarily as a helpful accessory for contest drivers who. under the rules of competition, have to mriiutnin,n pre-
scribed average speed over a given course. This fitting, which is a compact unit similar in appearance to a speedometer, has not come into general use among motor competitors abroad, but is said to have been well received, and will probably be marketed in England shortly. On the dial are two hands, one red and the other black. The former is driven bv clockwork, and when set in motion records the number of miles which should have been travelled in conformity with the particular average speed which the device, by means of a simple adjustment, has been set to check. The Had; pointer, which is operated by the speedometer drive, also moves lo record the actual mileage which has been travelled, so that the competitor can toil al a glance if he is running ahead of or behind his official average speed. If black is in advance of red. then he can at oni-e gauge his favorable margin, and conversely, when the red pointer is in advance, he is warned that he might be late at a "control."
