THE PRIME MINISTER

AUCKLAND VISIT ENDING DEPARTURE ON JANUARY 5 PLANS FOR COMING SESSION The Prime Minister, the Hon. M. J. Savage, will leave Auckland on January 5 for Wellington, where he will be engaged, with other members of his Cabinet, in shaping the Government’s legislative programme for the first session of the new' Parliament, which is expected to open in February. Mr Savago will probably take up residence more or less permanently in Wellington.

Mr Savage said last week that when the Cabinet resumed its meetings on January 8, several days would probably be spent in a full discussion of the problems which demanded immediate attention. Legislative proposals for their solution would be formulated as soon as possible and placed in tne hands of the law draftsman, so that there w r ould be no lack of business for the. attention of the House of Representatives at the opening of the session.

The Prime Minister has not had an opportunity for a complete holiday rest over the Christmas season. He has been receiving callers almost daily, and in addition has been attending to a fairly large volume of official business. On Friday Mr Savage was present at the opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s summer meeting at 4 Alexandra Park, and presented the ’ Auckland Trotting Cup to the winner. Arrangements have been made to extend a Maori welcome to Mr Savage, in his capacity of Native Minister, at Orakei on the afternoon of January 5, just before his departure for Wellington. Representatives of the principal tribes in New Zealand are expected to attend. The Prime Minister will probably be accompanied by Parliamentary colleagues and officers of the Labor Party in Auckland, and his party will include Mr E. T. Tirikatene, M.P. for Southern Maori, and Mr Tokouru Ratana, M.P. for Western Maori, who have allied themselves with the new Government. The welcome will be marked by traditional Maori ceremonial and the host and principal speaker will be Mr Nia Hira.
