HAWKE CUP CHALLENGE M.C.C. MATCH GUARANTEES REQUEST FROM WAIAPU Prospects for representative matches were discussed at fast evening's meeting of the Poverty Bay Cricket Association's executive, Mr. W. Stewart presiding over the following : —Messrs. C. Frazer, D. Wells, P. C. Dwyer, A. Bignail, M. K. Boon,, W. J. Jennings, A. Raker, J. J. Macdonald, and the lion, secretary, Mr. A. H. Wright. it was reported that the lady players were anxious to take advantage of the Napier invitation, and Mr. V. C. R. Mitford was deputed to arrange a suitable date.
Members viewed with pleasure the announcement that Poverty Bay would not be excluded from the M.C.C. team's itinerary, and it was decided that a special committee should arrange guarantors. It was unanimously decided to issue a challenge immediately for the Hawke Cup, which is at present held by Manawatu.
The Waiapu Cricket Association wrote asking that the Poverty Bay association should send a team to the Coast during February, urging that the match should be in addition to the Kirk Cup fixture. The meeting agreed to do its best to comply with the request, but deferred a decision in the meantime.
A letter from Mr. Moscrip suggested that the junior representative match between Hastings and Poverty Bay should be played on December 28.—Permission to play on that date was granted. The' New Zealand Cricket Council wrote stating that wide wickets must be used in all representative matches.— Members pointed out that this ruling did not affect Poverty Bay, which had made a practice of using the wide wickets, even in club games. The Auckland Cricket Association wrote that it had been decided' to abandon the Town v. Country match, because of an insufficient number of players being available.—lt was reported that M. Sharp would have been available.
Mr. Bignall asked what the executive intended doing regarding the allocation of trophies this season, saying that this was a matter which must be considered in view of there being no Thursday competition.—The matter was deferred until next meeting. Mr. Dwyer asked for a ruling on the payment of ground fees by players absent on a playing day.—lt was agreed that only those players unable to attend through having to work would be exempt.
It was stated that Hawke's Bay bad offered to send a team to Gisborne during the season, and the secretary was asked to write and inquire the approximate date.
Mr. Boon reported that books for the press had not been left at the appointed place, and urged all club secretaries to leave their books at Le Grand Cafe after each Saturday's play.
Mr. Macdonald tabled a notice of motion to rescind a previous resolution regarding the purchase of a lorry to pull the mower.
