STIMULATING INDUSTRY

j AID TO FARMERS SUBSIDY ON IMPLEMENTS PROPOSALS OUTLINED (Par Press Association.) PAPAROA, last night. Details of a. scheme approved by t IkUnemployment. Board to assist fanners to purchase farm implements and machinery, and in the erection of farm buildings, were announced to-day by the Minister of Finance, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates.

The now. scheme, said the Minister, is an extension of the existing 132 scheme, which provides for subsidies on improvements to dairy farms. The extension covers the granting of subsidies for liie. erection of woolslieds, implement sheds, ;i\\d other approved farm buildings, and the payment of subsidies on farm orchard machinery and implements of Now Zealand manufacture. The. subsidy will apply to work commenced on or before April 7)0, .1936.

The manufacture of agricultural implements is still languishing and after a careful examination of the existing subsidy schemes, (lie board, said the Minister, had eomo to tho conclusion that a largo volume of employment would he. stimulated both by this subsidy and the extension of grants for farm buildings. The amount, of the subsidy on farm buildings would Toe 8 per cent, on the contract price, or if the work is carried out by the farmer, 10 per cent, on the net, invoice, cost of materials.

Tho subsidy on implements would be £2 for tho first £lO net invoice, cost, exclusive of transport and installation charges, subsequently Is 4d in the. £ up to £IOO, thereafter 8 per cent, up to £2OO, and 5 per cent, on any amount in. excess of £2OO. The necessary recommendation would have to be made by the Minister of Agriculture as under the. existing B2 scheme before any subsidy could .be granted. The full schedule of the machinery to which tho subsidy would apply is being prepared and would be available shortly. "I should like to draw attention to tho fact. that, subsidy schemes now apply to new. dwellings and buildings to which no private gain is attached,'' said Mr Coates. "Churches, libraries, halls, the extensions to and painting of such build nigs, and the: equipment of dairy factories and dairy farms, as well, as the extension of such structures, are also elig ible."
