NAPIER V. GISBpRNE INTER-COLLEGIATE MATCH HOME SIDE WIN 21—6 Rugby palmar. w>\m treated, lo a. thrilling display of football at the O'-ai on Saturday afternoon, when Gisborne High School defeated Napier Boys’ j High School by 21 points to six in the annual inter-collegiate, fixture. The score was no real judication of the play am! bright movements on both sides abounded until the. final whistle sounded. The advantage of weight was with the visitors, especially in the- scrums, and both teams looked, fit for a- keen game. The homo side made a good impression against their opponents in the early stages of play and once the ball was set- in motion the spectators settled, down to enjoy a display of good, open football, with both sets of inside backs feeding their wings in spectacular passing bouts when opportunity offered, though solid rucking was also a feature of the match. The defence and attack in the back divisions of both sides were good and in tlie forwards the Napier pack was Jed by Morrissey, McDonald, and Phillips with the others consistently good, as were the homo pack. -Smiler's weight gave the Napier side much trouble as they found him very hard to stop once lie got under way. Young opened up Gisborne’s scoring account with a- dashing try in the first few minutes and later in the match had further opportunities to show his speed. The score at half-time was B—3 in favor of Gisborne.
PEAY IN SECOND HALF After the resumption of play, Napier pressed and a. movement, that, developed from a ruck looked particularly dangerous. An infringement,, however, saved Gisborne. ’Young took play back to Napier territory with a good run, but his stab punt was a little too hard and in the race for the ball lie was just beaten to it by Hickey, the opposing fullback. Gardner was called- upon soon after when the ball laid found its way into the Gisborne twenty-five and cleared with a- good line kick. The spectators came lo their feet when Young and Kermode featured in a- brilliant dash, which was brought to a sudden end when the latter was grassed by Pitts. Gisborne attacked repeatedly and were only stopped b.v tlio sound tackling of the Napier boys. Young, however, found an opening and increased the score. Gardner was sue cess ful with the kick.—Gisborne !o, Napier 3. Receiving a- pass from Smiler, Young again attacked soon after, but Hickey’s tackles were deadly. They attacked once more, but were again grassed and Robinson, securing the ball from the loose, dived over. Owing to a head injury, Hickey was compelled to leave the field and was replaced by Bull. Gardner converted.—Gisborne 18, Napier r NAPIER ON THE ATTACK After the kick-off a good run was put in by Edmondson and Cawston, bid they were brought down in turn by Young and Robinson, These two players had Gisborne on the defensive again soon after, but they were forced out. A penalty kick was awarded Napier about ,15yds. outside the Gisborne 25yd. line and a good effort by Broughton missed by a narow margin. Another Gisbortio. scoring movement was led by Sinilcr, who passed to Pvatt, the bail coming back to Smiler, who bullocked his way over with two of the Napier players clinging to him. . TARANAKI VICTORY DEFEAT OF AUCKLAND SIDE (Per Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, last night. I aranaki defeated Auckland at Rugby by 31 points to 29 yesterday. It was a remarkable match. The first half was mediocre, with little enterprise or skill in (he play. Auckland led 11-8. Rut the second half was brilliant and full ot skilful scoring movements. Taranaki, at one stage, led by 31 lo 14. Taranaki just shaded Auckland in each department. Collins, at fullback for . Taranaki, 1 dayed a magnificent game, which, in a tong line of others, caused 8000 spectators to question whether it was not. a mistake that Collins is not in (lie All Black team to tour England, Tries were scored by Solomon and another forward, A. Brown (3), Killeen and Erankham, Bush converting four, file six tries lor 'Jaranaki were scored bv O. Brown (2), Galbraith, Pcppcrell. Kdwards and Young, five being com verted by Collins.
Probably the outstanding players for Auckland were. Killeen and A. ‘ Brown Auckland was without its All Blacks, ami Taranaki had ihree key men absent, including its captain, Clarke, also ils hooker and first five-eighths.
