Fifteen thousand spectators were present at the centre’ court tit. 'Wimbledon. The courts were fast, and the weather bright and windy. Austin showed superb- control, driv- : 11 o- with unerring length and volleying prettily, took tlm'birst- set. in which Allison's service made no impression. Allison. hitting louder and more accurately carrying his strokes, -dominated the second set. Serving and volleying still more powerfully Allison outplayed Austin in the third set. Allison started erratically and. after an interval. Austin placing accurately, held the set. .1 he fifth set was splendidly Jought, Austin drawing level -Irom I—3.1 —3. the delicate mechanism ot his game just prevailing over the more robust American, despite the latter leading 6—4 when he lost the service. Allison’s surprising fade-out lias left America little hope. Perrv practically walked through the first set against j)utlgc, who did not play a noteworthy stroke. Budge in tile second set drove better and led 3—l and ,5—4. Perry, dashing agile .and aggressive, regained the lead 6 —5. bid Budge’s great erosseourt backhands took the 'set. Budge’s keen driving, brought out all the, wonderful resources of Perry’s game, which in the fourth set showed tor still better advantage.
