PROTECTION IN BRITAIN

WHEAT AND MEAT SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENTS (.Received Julv 22. 10.50 a.m.) LONDON. July 21. Tho Prime Minister, Mr Stanley Baldwin, addressing a National Government demonstration at Halstead, claimed that wheat was the most successful of the tariff experiments. It made wheat growing modestly remunerative, increased the acreage and the loaf supplied was only a fraction dearer than if the tariff had not been in! reduced.

He emphasised regarding beef that it was wanted to eliminate, as far as possible, perpetual alterations in quotas which caused friction with the Dominions and those who should be Britain’s best’trade friends. Britain had been extraordinarily successful in the manner in which tlie mutton and land) quota restrictions had been handled, possibly because fewer markets were affected and also because those interested adhered to the quotas, these being better than other forms of restriction. Nevertheless, they had raised mutton prices substantially in throe years without an appreciable difference to the consumer.
