COUNTIES STOP DOLE
SHORTAGE OF LABOR IN WHEAT FIELDS DESMOINES (Iowa), July 20. To meet a labor shortage in tho wheat fields, with the harvest season reaching its height, relief headquarters of 10 counties stopped dole payments to force the unemployed to accept the work, the prevailing pay being two dollars a day with “keep.” Planters are complaining bitterly that most of tho normal labor supply is now on relief. A majority refuse to accept work at comparable rates. The .State Governors throughout the wheat belt are preparing to take drastic action to force the unemployed to aecepit work unless the Federal Government intervenes.
