LONDON AIR DEFENCE
SCHEME OF EXERCISES OVER r»7O PLANES ENGAGED DAY AND NIGHT RAIDS (British Official Wireless.) Roc. 2 p.m. RUGBY, July- 19. Tho annual air defence exercises begin on Monday evening with a raid by daybombers belonging to the “Southland forces on London, which will be defended by fighters of the “Northland forces. The operations, in which over 570 aircraft, consisting of day and night bombers and single-seater and twoseater fighters, will take part, will he carried nut in two main phases, flic first lasting 14 hours and the second, commencing on Tuesday evening, continuing over 60 hours, during which there will he one period of 453 hours of continuous exercises.
A daylight, raid on Monday will he followed by a night attack in which the latest types of bombers will be used. All the main targets will be in the London area since the exercises, as in former years, are concerned with the problem of the air defence of the capital. The ground organisation of the defence, which will include anti-aircratt batteries, searchlights and sound-detect-ing apparatus, will he strengthened hv territorial units.
