TO-DAY’S REP. GAME MAORIS V. POVERTY BAY The all-Maori hockey team to play India at- Rotorua on \v ednesday played the Poverty Bay representative team on the Childers road reserve this afternoon. In spite of the overnight, rain, tho ground was in splendid condition. The Poverty Bay team was without the services of T. T. Turbitt, who was included in the New Zealand team ior the third test against India this aiternoon, and also S. Moeau, who was included in the Maori team, tor which, however, he was not available this afternoon. Two Wairoa players in Ilmira and T. Du K*y were in the Poverty Bayeleven.

The Maoris looked a formidable lot, as they lined op to the field. Five were from Poverty Bay and Watty McKay, Hawke's Hay. was remembered by the majority of the spectators for his many fine games for Waerenga-n-hika Maori college and for Poverty Bay reps, of a few years ago. The teams were as follows : Maoris.—Goal, M. Rum; tullbacks, R. Pomona and M. Tareahu; halves, T. Omai, J. I’ohatu. and R. Halbert; forwards, W. McKay. T. Haerewa, C. Fere. J. Edwards and M. Mangahahta. Poverty Bay.—Goal. Thaira: fullbacks, C, Scholium and I. Stacey; halves, F. Gavin, J. Turbitt and I. Dourlas ; forwards, 0. Quinn, T. Dulev, G. Slade. P. .Tones and A. McLean.

The Maoris played in black jerseys with a rising sun in gold ou the right breast. Messrs. Burkinshaw and Tuhoe were the referees.

Play opened at a. great rate. Poverty Bay attacked up the left wing, McLean putting across a long centre, which went begging. He tried to repeat the performance a little later, but was frustrated by Tureahu, and Mangakahia streaked up the left- wing. Stacey intercepting the centre with a speculator. The Poverty Bay forwards swept back, and the Maoris conceded a penalty corner. Slade’s shot was blocked, but .Jones intercepted, and although he slipped to a sitting position he flicked the ball into the net for the opening goal. Poverty Bay .. . . 1 Maoris .. .. .. 0 The Maoris rushed into the Poverty Bay circle,, and Ihaira was called on to save, while Scholium blocked a further shot. A succession of penally corners followed, and from one of these Edwards shot a splendid goal, making the score:— Maoris .. .. .. 1 Poverty' Bay .. . . 1 Fast play up and down the field developed into a fast rush up the Poverty Bay right wing, and Quinn put in an excellent -centre, which was accepted bv Slade, who, however, overran the ball when almost in an empty goalmouth. Rum getting -back in time to clear. Quinn later ran from the 25 into the circle and drew the goalio. leaving Slade to tap the ball in. Poverty' Bay .. .. 2 Maoris .. • • .. 1 Poverty Bay’s training and combination was beginning to tell and the forwards were showing great understanding. Quinn again opened the way for a score, flicking the ball in from the sideline, giving Slade a clean shot at goal. Poverty Bay 3 Maoris ••• 1 Tho Quinn-Slade combination raised the hopes of tho Poverty Bay supporters once more, when Quinn ran in with the ball at his stick. Slade added the finishing touches, but was ruled off-side. Midfield play continued till the Maoris set up a sustained attack, ending in a penalty corner. Edwards put in a hot shot, which was. cleared by Stacey, but McKay came in on the left wing to beat tho goalio just before half time, when the score sto'od: Poverty Bay 3 Maoris 2

TEAM TO TOUR FIJI NEW ZEALAND UNIVERSITY The following New Zealand, University hockey team has been selected to tour'Fiji:— Goalkeeper, L. R. Hercus (Otago); full-backs, R. D. McEwan (Victoria), S. McDonald (Canterbury); half-baelcs, F. 11. Stewart (Victoria), C. V. Walter (Canterbury), E. S. Hobson (Otago), F. L. Newcombe (Victoria); forwards, R. J. Walton (Otago), K. X. Struthers (Massey College), H. B. Lawry (Massey College), E. R. Huston (Canterbury), 11. C. Ford (Canterbury), L. B. Denoy (Victoria). The team will sail by the Niagara on August 20, and will play five matches in Fiji.
