OBITUARY

MR, W. A. PERCY (I’or Press Association.) WE ISLINGTON, last night. The death is recorded of -Mr. William Alfred Uercy, a member of one of the pioneer families of Petoue. Ho was an expert horticulturist. SIR CHARLES HOLDSWOR-TU (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Advice lias been received by the Union !Steam Ship Company that Sir Charles iloldswortli died in London on Friday*, aged 72 years. Sir ’Charles became general manager of the company in 1898 and managing director in 1914. holding the latter appointment until his retirement in 1930. tie was knighted in 1926. lie was a son of the late -Mr. J. G. Uoldsworth, for many years Commissioner of Crown Lands in Wellington. lie was born in Wellington on December 14, 1863, and on completing his education at Wellington College in 1880 he entered the service of the late Captain W. 1!. Williams, who was the owner of several sailing vessels running in the coal trade between Newcastle and Wellington, and also of some steamers trading between Wellington and lhe West. Coast of the .South Island*. Captain Williams plated Mr. Ilohlsworlh in charge of his Wcslport branch, and while he was stationed there (1885) the former gentleman sold his vessels to the. Union Company. Mr. iloldswortli then joined that, company, and was its representative' ub Westport until 1891. when he became its manager for Tasmania. During the time he was stationed at. Hobart he cl id excellent work for the company, and the great ability which he displayed was recognised by his promotion in .1898 to the position of chief manager and inspector, with headquarters in Dunedin. When he took up iiis duties at Hobart the competition between his company, the Huddart Parker Proprietary,- arid the Tasmanian Steam Navigation Company was keen, and his position was anything but a sinecure, lie was associated to a great extent with the absorption of the Tasmanian Conipany by the Union Company, and also with the. purchase of T. A. Reynolds and Company’s licet of local coastal steamers.
