Benefit From Fire
pEAT Vires in tho Nowstead and Eureka districts, Waikato, have benefited largc-lfraets of poor swamp An inspection of those areas "which were swept by fire in January and February shows that the areas are now Covered with A sward of fresh pasture. The peat fires, although they were very troublesome at the time, and were the’ cause of extensive damage to fences, hedges and the then existing pastures, cleared off large areas of noxious weeds and left a great deal of valuable potash in their train. Grass seed whs sown by hand as soon as the- late Autumn rains quenched the fires aid mdde it possible to walk Ovd* fil'd land. There was an immediate tAlce, and the grass is now in A Nourishing condition. Many of flid farmers are now. of tlie opinion that the fires were a blessing in disguise, and that they did more good than harm.
