CRAWFORD BEATS PERRY
CHAMPION BELOW FORM IALTERNATIONAL CONTEST THREE-DAY MATCH PLAN (Received July 19, 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 18. In a three-day tennis match at Eastbourne between England and Australia on Davis Cup lines, Crawford defeated Perry, (5 —0, (i—4, B—lo, li—2; and Austin defeated McGrath, 7—5, 3—G, 7—5, G—2.
Crawford’s form was sound enough, but Perry was so unbelievably bad that the Australian had merely to allow the champion to continue the process of beating himself. Crawford Avon the first sot in eight minutes, lie led 3—o in the socond bcfore Perry played a stroke worthy of the Wimbledon champion. Perry then made a strong effort to recover command, but too kite to save the set. By a great uphill fight Perry took the third set. After that he aviis in no condition to stand against CraAvford, who took the final set for the match. It was an astonishingly easy Avin. Austin and McGrath provided a close struggle. McGrath’s serving and volleying Averc superior, but Austin’s great consistency and excellent ground Strokes gave him the victory.
