TELEPHONE EXCHANGE

Statements regarding tlie alleged antiquated state of the telephone exchange equipment in Gisborne, made at yesterday’s meeting of tlie Chamber ol Commerce in the course of a discussion on the necessity for the early installation of the automatic system, were referred today to the chief postmaster at Gisborne, Mr. G. Nelson, lie commented that the statements were without foundation, as the equipment was one of the most up-to-date of the manna! installations in New Zealand. lie gave an emphatic denial to the allegation that the equipment was so worn that the plugs will not stay in, and added that an inspection of* the plant by critical members of the Chamber of Commerce must convince them that there is little to complain of in the order qf the equipment, hr• in the degree of skill shown by the exchange staff in operating it.
