THE BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY M FETING The Gisborne Borough Council met last, night. There were present the Mayor, Mr. I). \Y. Coleman, M.P., Crs. 11. 11. DeCosta, J. 11. llall, D. S. Thompson, Ji Webb, P. W. Bushncll, It. Holmes, 11. E. Mamie, U. Bradley Smith, and N. 11. Bull. Mrs. M. Lawless, lion, secretary of the Croquet Club, wrote applying for tho use of the tenuis court at the Macrae Bath, pending tho completion of the greens on the Ruteno road reserve. —The matter was referred to the reserves committee. REPORTS WORKS COMMITTEE The works committe reported:— “Tenders were received for various contracts, and ’the committee recommends the acceptance of the following:—Cartage of spawls and metal from county quarry, Patutahi, W. 8. Gould; supply ot 1650 cubic yards of washed screened river shingle for road maintenance, Messrs. Clark and Son; supply of 1200 cubic yards of washed screened river shingle for hot mix, Messrs. Clark and Son; supply of 2,50 toils of bitumen, Shell Company ■(N.Z.), Limited; supply of coal and ■firewood, Clare and Clare, Limited. In regard to the supply of 450 tons of Napier shingle, the committee recommends that the acceptance of a tender be held over pending the engineer communicating with the Napier Harbor Board in an endeavor to have the restrictions on the source of supply lifted. Quotations were received for the supply of a motor truck, and the engineer and bus manager were asked to confer on this matter, and to submit their recommendations to the council.” “In regard to William Pettie bridge, the engineer reports: —’As a temporary measure small sections of the wheel guard oil both sides ot the bridge have been cut away to allow stormwater to drain off ihe bridge. This will not completely remedy the nuisance, as tho bituminous slab on the original timber decking has developed depressions and cracks which hold water. This unevenness is due to ihe shifting of the timber below the bitumen, and when the replacing of the existing slab has to be, undertaken the question of laying of longitudinal timbers on the present cross decking to check any movement will have to be considered; this being the only means of keeping a bituminous slab true to camber. ’ “Footpath, Gladstone road. —Tho manager of the Bank of New Zealand wrote drawing attention to the uneven state of the footpath in front of the bank promises. It is impossible to give this matter attention during the winter months, and the committee recommends that, the question of footpaths in Gladstone road be given consideration when tho reconstruction of Gladstone road is being undertaken in ihe summer. “Footpath, Whitaker street. —The engineer was authorised to effect necessary repairs to this foopath. “Street light, corner Oswald street and Run street.—An application for a street light in this locality was referred to the street lighting committee for consideration. “Culvert, corner Oswald street and Massey mad—The engineer was authorised to place a culvert across the stormwater drain at this intersection, for the convenience of pedestrians. “Removal of dwelling.—An application from a property owner for permission to remove a dwelling to a section in upper Palmerston road; also requesting the council to continue the formation of this portion ot Palmciston road, and make available tho drainage and sanitation services to the section was considered by the committee, and it was decided to recommend that approval be granted for the removal of the dwelling, provided t’he building by-laws are complied with. In regard to the continuation of the formation of upper‘Palmerston road, it is recommended that no action betaken, as this section of the road is not dedicated, and, therefore, the formation of the road and extension of sewer is a liability on the property

owners. “Vestibule door, Regent Theatre. — This matter was reconsidered, and the committee has no further recommendation to make, other than that submitted to the previous meeting, viz., ‘that the necessary requirements will be met by the installation of a regulation fireproof door in the opening, the owner and Fire Underwriters’ Association to be notified that the council accepts no responsiblity in case of fire. “Hoardings.—The question of relioeiiMng various hoardings and advertising displays is held over for consideration at next meeting ot the committee.” r “Street names—A number of -street name boards are being prepared and will be erected as soon as finished. . , 14 Valley road drains. —1 nave to draw the council’s attention to the damage being done to private property in Valley road caused by the falling in of the sides of the deep drains between George street and James street.’’—This matter wa s referred to the works committee. “Arrears of rent, borough leasehold —The committee considered an application from a lessee of borough property for an extension of time m which to meet arrears of rent, and recommends that the posit ion be again reviewed in six months, in the meantime tho lessee to lie requested to make every endeavor to reduce the amount owing.” .
