(Herald Correspondent.) Airs. E. J. West, who died at Napier on Friday morning at the age of 94 years, was a shipmate of the Herald's correspondent. The ship in which she and her husband came to New Zealand was the barque Inverness [9OO tons), not the Inverne as stated. The vessel did not go to Napier, her loading being for Wellington, and the passengers for Napier were sent to that port by the old s.s. Rangatira. The ship’s ( surgeon was Dr. Frood, who practised at Wai pukurail for many years.
The basketball fixtures for Wednesday are :—A grade : Ex-High v. Waiau, Alexandra. Park, 2.45 p.m.; High School v. Rovers, school: court, 3.20 p.m.; Convent Old Girls v. Redwing, Alexandra Park, 4.5 p.m. B grade: Con vent Commercial v. High School I. Alexandra Park, 3.30 p.m.; Primary v. High School 11., to be arranged. The special competition prize-winners-at Thursday’s euchre party and dance at Osier’s Mall were Alesdames J. Ape daile and J. Androson.
The curtain-raiser Rugby match on Saturday, Possibles v. Probables, insulted in a win for the former by eight points to three. For the winners, Fitzgerald and Aldridge scored tries, the latter converting one. J. Smith kicked a penalty goal for the losers. At. the quarterly . meeting of the Methodist Church, held at the residence of Mr. G. Alalmquist, the circuit steward, the Rev, H. J. Odell and Mrs. Odell were present, and there was also a good attendance of the parishioners, who were welcomed by the Rev. D. C. Alley. After the devotional opening, it was decided to send a message ol good cheer to Mr. and Mrs. C. Stone, and greetings to two churches eplebrat ing their jubilees. The financial state ment was of a satisfactory nature, the returns of youth work, Sunday school and Bible class work were very encour aging, tho roll number in the case ol the latter being ICO. A committee was set up to consider ministerial invita tions in view of the October meetings. Mrs. Alalmquist served a dainty supper, and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks.
The second challenge Rugby game I'm the Barry Cup is to bo played on the Lambton Square sports ground on Saturday. Tho following team will do battle for Wairoa: Fullback, Hutchinson ; three-quarters, S. Smith, Tremewan, Pakimana, Ilirivvini; fiveeighths, Russell, T.c Ngaio, J. Cowan; half, Winiata; forwards, Tier, Whaanga, Mataira, Jackson, Powdrell, Rika Collins, J. Ormond, S. Gemmell, Kahukura, P. Gemmell and Hodgson. Alessrs. Alorland and Lomas, inspectors, visited Te lteinga School last week
