OLD MAORI RELICS
GIFTS TO LORD GALWAY The history of a taiaha and paddle presented to the Governor-General on his first visit, to Rotorua bv the aged chief, Rangi 3e Aorere Te Riri, was to be related to Viscount and Viscountess Galway to-day, when they halted at Tikitere on their way to Gisborne. His Excellency has expressed a wish to learn the history of the taiaha, which is a treasured heirloom of the Te Kiri family, and which was used in several notable ceremonial occasions. __ The chief was also to present to His Excellency a wooden mere carved from a puriri block taken from the foundations of the old flour mill established by the early missionaries at Te Ngae, Rotorua. Some miles further oil Maoris resid. trig in the locality were to gather at the famous wishing tree on ITongi’s Track, where it had been suggested that Their Excellencies might observe the traditional Maori custom of laying green fern fronds at the foot of the tree!
