SUBSIDY CONTINUED
BRITISH BEET SUGAR TEMPORARY MEASURE CRITICISM IN COMMONS (British Official Wireless.) Kcc. 12 noon - BI'CBY, June 12. The House of Commons passed the second reading of the British Sugar Subsidy Bill by 134 votes to 36, The bill provides for a continuance ot the Government grant on sugar manufactured from home-grown beet for 12 months from the end of August, at an estimated cost of about £2,750.0C0. The Opposition moved the rejection of the bill in a resolution which argued thjit while the abrupt termination of State assistance was undesirable, ihe subsidy, instead of benefiting agriculture, ‘had been used to increase the profits of private monopolies. Several speakers criticised the Government for producing a temporary measure in place of proposals embodying its decision on the report of the committee of. inquiry, a majority of which recently recommended the discontinuation of the" Government grant. ..It- was announced at question time that Air Walter Elliot hoped to make a definite pronouncement of the Government’s policy on this matter before the summer recess.
