WAIROA ROADS

COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT v ilt.Tuld I'orrtispomiuiit.) The engineer, I\lr. A. G. Smith, in addition to a detailed report on tie, main highways, reported generally as follows to this week’s meeting oi the U airoa County Council: "Opito road.*- Approximately the lasi half-mile on this road is the required length to be dealt with to' improve access to the woolshed and homestead on Native Trust lands, llereheretau block. The lirst step to be taken will be to deviate this length of road. Inc present surveyed road runs across and along the bank of the Tahanui Stream, fin this route the stream has to he bridged, gulch ways tilled up and adverted, also another small creek t.--bridge and the Hat formation of road to carry out. On the proposed deviation the road is practically all formed and at present is the road giving access to the homestead, which only leaves the Tahanui Stream to bridge to give a permanent road. The bridge will be about 80ft. long in two or three spans and will cost approximately £750. A low level bridge could be installed for about £I2OO, which would answer the purpose, for it is seldom that Hood waters would block traffic. The station authorities have erected three low level bridges across this stream, but they have all washed away and they wilt have to install a temporary bridge foi this season’s wool carting. “Ruataniwba road drainage.—As instructed, in company with Crs. Hill and Carroll, 1 investigated the drainage of liootl water. Satisfactory arrangements have been made with the owners to allow the drain to run through their respective properties from road to river. I have had the line of- drain levelled and flic work is now well in hand. “Mangaone road.—This road is now practically opened up for light wheel traffic to the Mangapahi junction, but is verv soft where the widening was curried out, over the big slip. “Tangiwai road.—This road has now been opened up for wheel traffic as far as the big filling washed out at tin water drive. After this filling is replaced it will not take long to open the road to the Tangiwai station. “Tukemokihi road.—Good progress lias been'made in opening up this road for wheel traffic, and a car can now get in as far as the Tukemokihi Stream when the road is dry enough to travel on. I am having the steel girders from the Tukemokihi bridge salvaged ns soon as I can get a winch and tackle in to carry out the work.”
