N.Z. ART GALLERIES CARNEGIE ASSISTANCE News that a grant of £IO,OOO has been made by the Carnegie Institute for the purpose of furthering the educational side of art galleries and museums in New Zealand, and that the Bt. Bov. H. \Y. Williams, Bishop of Waiapu, has been appointed to the committee which will administer this fund, will be received with ,a great deal of pleasure bv those who have so generously supported the movement for the establishment of a Hawke’s •Bay art gallery and museum at Napier, the foundation stone of which is to be laid by the Governor-General, Lord Galway, when he visits Napier next week, says the Telegraph. In making this statement, Mr A. B. Hurst, acting-secretary of the Aft Gal lery and Museum Committee of the Napier Arts and Crafts Society, said that it was hoped that some proportion of this sum would be made avail able for tho furthering of art in this district. The grant was made follow ing the visits paid to New Zealand in recent years of members of. tho Carnegie Trust and, coining at a time when the new art gallery for Hawke's Bay was about to be commenced, was most opportune. The Bishop of Waiapu, he stated, had already consulted with other, members of the committee appointed to handle the fund, and it was hoped that Hawke’s Bay would receive some benefit from the money.
