PLANTATION SCHEME
TREES FOR SAND DUNES Coastal sand dunes between the Manamatu River and the. Waitarere were recently inspected from the air by Mr. J. Linklater, M.P'., so that he could acquaint himself with the locality and conditions obtaining in respect of the project to plant the area in forest trees as an unemployment relief scheme. A visit was also made to the nursery at Waitarere.
Reference to his visit of inspection was made at a meeting of the. Foxton Harbor Board by Mr. Linklater, who congratulated Mr. P. W. Goldsmith, Mayor of Levin, on the, success of this project fostered by him. It was reported by Mr. Goldsmith that the scheme, was now well in hand. The dry summer had been detrimental to the. nurseries, but it was expected a considerable amount or planting out would be done this year. Rabbits were proving a nuisance as the. locality was outside tho rabbit board area. The .scheme was proceeding quite satisfactorily, and he hoped that the area between the Manawatu and Rangitikei Rivers would soon bo taken in hand. A number of men have taken up their quarters at Waitarere.
