DRIVING TEST
FOR ENGLISH MOTORISTS 800,000 TO FACE EXAMINERS LONDON, April 23. The position of British motorists under the driving tests is made clear by a new statement from the Ministry of iransP °After June 1 any applicant for a driving license will hnve to satisfy the authorities that he held a driving license before April 1,1934, or that he has passed the prescribed test of competence to Those'who take out their first licenses now will escape the examination until they want to renew next year. After June 1, applicants will have to go through the business of Phonal license, carrying an "L on their cat and having to be accompanied by qualified driver when on the ; pnbhc who has taken out his or her n«t driving license since April 1 of last year will sooner or later have to pass the driving test. After the "guillotine on Jnne 1. no license will be renewed without the production of an official certificate of competence. In the last 12 months 400,000 persons, it is stafea', have taken out first licenses. All tliese have to be tested during the next 12 months, in addition to the. 400,000 who, in the ordinary course ol ovents. will be coming forward as applicants for licenses.
