GREAT NEW YORK FIRE
WAREHOUSE ABLAZE 400 FIREMEN BAFFLED NEW YORK, April 20. One hundred firemen and several hundred underground railway passengers wore overcome by acrid smoke from a persistent blaze in a Brooklyn waterfront warehouse to-d'ay. The fire ignited a quantity of rubber and tar paper, and, with repeated explosions of' accumulated gases, defied the efforts of -100 firemen to extinguish it. Groat billows of black smoke were sucked into the, underground railways, causing annoyance to thousands of passengers, while it was necessary to remove hundreds, many of whom required to go to hospital for attention. The underground ventilating system carried the smoke several miles through the tunnels, halting •transportation for several hours. In all, eight alarms sounded, bringing ?>?• pieces of fire-fighting equipment and six ambulances, which spent busy hours removing prostrate firemen, many of whom were seriously burnt.
