BRANCH IN TE KARAKA FORMATION PROPOSED On Thursdav last some of the ( ' ,,n| - mittee of thc'lWrty liny Society lor ihe I'revention of Cruelty to Animals visited the Tc Karakn Women|s Institute with the object of co-operating with it to establish 11 branch of the society in Te Karakn. The visitors were received by /'osihunes Allan and Hobbs, the president and secretary respectively of the institute.
The ordinary business was almost concluded and as there was an array of eggless cakes displayed for competition, Mrs. Tom Terry was asked by one of the committee to assist in judging them. Afternoon tea was provided, after which the visitors addressed the meeting. The secretary. Mr Weave, gave a -■'noit account of the commencement <>t the' effort to prevent cruelty to animals just one hundred years ago and how hostility and opposition were overcome with the aid of the. support given by the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria. He also spoke of the efforts of the Poverty Hay Society, its memberyhv' and luiu.iiciul position. The Rev. IT. Daniel gave an excellent address, which was much appreciated, speaking of the great strides that had taken place in recent years in the treatment of anjmals. and saying that if all school children were (aught how to treat animals and birds cruelty would gradually become a thing of Ihe past. lie mentioned how at a .siiburmvn school recently the master induced the pupils to bring their pels lo school one afternoon : they were so many and varied as almost to constitute a menagerie and it was noticeable, how fond the children- were of theft own pets and interested ia each others.
Mi'. Frank Hill, the .Society's inspector, spoke of the different methods of ilt-t'-entmcm and npgloct he had to eontend with mid how most cases were perpetrated through ignorance or want of thought, lie found that in most eases rime advice, or a warning was effective, ihough in a lew eases co-operation with i he police had- been necessary. Alts Tom '.retry spoke of "the ditlienlties the society had ha,d to contend with and the work which had been achieved l>v th.e society's officers.
.Mrs Allan responded on behalf of the institute, thanked the visitors for their interesting and instructive remarks, and promised to bring the subject forward for consideration at the next meeting a month hence.
