TE PUIA SPORTS CHAMPIONS IN ACTION GillL WIN'S BARRY GUP Two of the outstanding Maori swimiiß'i's of flic Dominion, W. Wliarcaitu and .It. Simon, both of Rotorua, participated in the Easter swimming carnival held in the tepid bath at Te I’uia on Saturday, when a large attendance ot the general public supported the enterprise ot the Gisborne Surf and Swimming Club in arranging the attraction. The two Maori swimmers finished lirst and second, respectively, in the 100yds. handicap, and the backstroke handicap, Wharuitu proving the better in each instance, while with J. Beckett to make up the team, they won the relay race from the scratch mark, after conceding substantial handicaps to some of the other teams. The cup presented by Mr. D. J. Barry for the competitor registering the best aggregate for the season at r le Puia carnivals was won by Miss G. Kerr, whose aggregate was 19 points, while B. McSwcency was second with 18 points. Dog-paddle races for special trophies gave rise to a good deal of amusement, as well as to keen competition, and the entertainment of the large crowd was well catered for in every way. Mesrs. J- Perrin and L. Yates, of Rotorua, acted as judges, Messrs. T. It. Gordon and It. Beige as time-keepers, Mr. it. Aislabic as call' steward, Mr. C. E, Brown as diving judge, and Mr. E. T.
