i NCBE ASED TURNOVER Figures' which were released by the director-general of the Post and Telegraph Department, Mr. G. McNamara, disclose that there are increases hi every section of postal work for 1934. .The. most outstanding advance during the year was in connection with letters and letter-cards posted and delivered in ihe. Dominion. Thirteen millions represents the net increase in this business for 1934. as compared with the previous vear, and the gross figures make an impressive total of 275.063.943. The extent of the letter-writing habit in different- centres was shown by the following details from postal districts: Auckland, 56,000,000; Wellington, 48.f.OO.CCO: Christ church. 35.000,000; Dunedin. 23.00a.C00; Hamilton. .18.750.000: Napier. 13.000.000; Jnverairgill. 12,800,000; Palmerston North. I2.0u0,00i). Last, year's total of 3,460.719 parcels posted and delivered showed an improvement of 174,531 packages and commercial papers increased in number by over 12 1 ,- 000,000. reaching a total in excess of 167,000,000. The cash value of _ the postage side of the department's husiness for 1934 was approximately £1,000,000.
