DEPORTATION ACTION

NOTED BRITISH AUTHOR ALLEGED COMMUNIST (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) CHICAGO. March 22. Mr. Evelyn Strachey, the well-known British author, appeared before the Immigration Board to-day for a formal deportation hearing, it being alleged that he had entered America by moans of mis. statements. The report will be forwarded to the Department of Labor at Washington for final decision. Questioners read from Mr. Strachey's writings and attempted to show that he believed in the violent overthrow of the Government, and also quoted from the writings of Marx and Engels, requesting Mr. Strachey to comment on them. Mr. Strachey's defence was that while he was a believer in communism, he was not a member of the party. He had never urged violence in any American lectures.

Mr. Strachey will be allowed a more detailed defence at the hearing! to-mor-row.
