BEACH IMPROVEMENT
• 4> NEW PROJECTS CONSTRUCTION OE KITCHEN FLOODLIGHTS FOR CAMPERS Further plans for the improvement of facilities at the Waikauao Beach were considered at a well-attended nieoting of the- Wuikanae Beach ImjPiovenicQt Society, held last evening. The principal projects are for the building of a permanent kitchen for the use of campers, and the erection of floodlighting equipment as part of the 'motor-camp facilities, the light to be under the control of the caretaker.
Plans for the new kitchen building, and estimates of the cost of erection and equipment were tabled by the chairman, Mr. A. J. Nficol, and were adopted after an interesting discussion, in the course of which members expressed appreciation of the advancement which would be effected. Authority was given for the work to proceed' as soon as possible, so that the new facilities will lie ready for the. opening of next camping season.
The plans tabled showed accommodation 25ft. by 10ft., the building being Jit ted with shelves ami benches, and equipped with a gas boiler, gas griJlers, gas cooker, and gas irons, all of the prepayment type. Two washbasins and two sinks will complete the general, equipment of the kitchen, which should serve the public well for years. In connection with the gas equipment, the chairman also tabled an offer from the Gisborne Gas Company regarding the installation, the company offering a substantial donation to the funds of the society as its contribution towards increasing the amenities of the beach.
The offer was gratefully accepted, the chairman pointing out that the total outlay incurred in connection with the scheme would be much reduced by the generosity of the company. The society was undertaking a net liability of well over £:!O<J in the construction and equipment of the kitchen.
In regard to the floodlighting proposal the committee. gave authority for the matter to be carried into effect, and there was general agreement on the point that the provision of additional lighting would be of general benefit.
On the motion of Mr. H. P. Forster, it was also decided to liave a topographical survey of the area under the control of the improvement Society prepared, and submitted to a landscape authority. In support of this project, it, -was stated that the society might easily expend money uselessly in temporary improvements, unless it had a definite scheme to work to. A vote of thanks was conveyed to Mr. D. S. Thompson, for a generous contribution towards the cost of procuring the topographical' survey.
