MORE VIOLENCE FEARED

NEW YORK NEGRO RIOTS POLICE MAINTAIN ORDER (Blue. Tel. Copyright—United Tress Assn.) NEW YORK, March 20. Throughout the day police detachments maintained order in the Harlem district, where thousands of negroes rioted on the previous evening, with the prospects of more violence after nightfall. Last night's rioting continued until dawn. The police in several instances were forced to shoot looters, two of whom died in hospital. To-day ICO, mostly rioters, nursed wounds, many requiring medical attention.

The boy who started the trouble was found by his photograph displayed in the newspapers. He is unharmed, but by this time the unruly elements are in ugly mood and have apparently forgotten the incident involving the child. it is estimated that oyer 600 shop windows were broken and other property damaged to the extent of several hundred thousand dollars.

Many attribute the rioting to the serious* economic conditions in Harlem, sometimes called the "world's biggest negro city," in which of 200,000 persons packed into a relatively small area, about half are unemployed, with corresponding poverty and unhealthy conditions.

A grand jury stated with particular emphasis that the alleged Communist agitation was responsible for most of the trouble.
