EDUCATION GRANTS

INCREASES REQUESTED APPEALS TO MINISTER (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A request that the Government should reinstate the grants to the Workers' Educational Association was made to the Hon. S. G. Smith by a deputation from "the Dominion council of the association. Mr. Smith, replying, said that lie always had been sympathetic with the movement, and said the cancellation of the grants was a matter of Government policy. The 1 question of restoration was now before tne .Government, and the association would be advised at the earliest possible moment of the Cabinet's decision. A second deputation to the Minister Was one from the Wellington School Committees' Federation for increased capitation grants. Mr. Smith said he desired to do the best possible for all children of New Zealand, but was hampered by lack of funds. He desired to go into the whole matter'and discuss details with the Wellington Education Board.
