SHEEP DOG TRIALS
MATAWAI CLUB MEETING DICTATOR WINS LONG HEAD LOW SCORES IN SHORT. HEAD (Herald Correspondent.) A clear, in win was registered by It. Cranswick's well-known heading dog, Dictator, in the first class at the Mataw.ai sheep dog I rials, commenced this week. Dictator scoring -1-1 points against the second-placed dog's 4<U. There were some excellent runs in the long head class, ami the .judge, Mil*. S. Parkinson, spoke well ot the general standard of Hie trial. In the second class, the short head, the average of the work shown was not as high as in the longer run, and though is points was the maximum possible, the winner of the class aggregated only 'Xt\, while the other place-getters were well down the scale. The low scoring in this event may be an indication of the general lack of interest in the short head, a class which brings the dogs close under the eye of the judge, and in respect of which a highly critical standard is almost invariably laid down. Visitors among the competitors at the Matawai meeting included I). Cianswick, 11. Ilelhtmhy, R. Weather-
all, K. Totig. M. Phelps, and F. Coventry, all well known throughout the district as owners of good dogs; while the entries of Airs .terrain, a well-known lady competitor, were watched with a great deal of interest.
