AMATEUR ATHLETICS
H.B. HEEALD SHIELD
RETAINED BY GISBORNE
TOTAL POINTS EQUAL
'Hie Gisborne Amateur Athletic and Harrier Club retained the Hawke's Bay Herald Shield in competition against the Napier challengers in Napier on Saturday. Each team scored ISS)J points, and under the rules the holders have the right to hold the shield, in the event of a tie.
Performers who contributed mainly to the points were: G. Quinn, who won the 100yds., 220yds. and 440yds. in good' stvle, contributing 15 points to the total; T. Campbell, who won the one mile and three-mile cycle races, tying for third in the half-mile, contributing'' HH points; and P. Kaua, who won the hop, step and jump and the broad jump, contributing 10 points. The points secured by these three totalled 35J. Gisbornc's success came, somewhat us a surprise-... Although Gisborne. de-feated-Napier in the- last .shield contest in Gisborne, it was expected that with Napier's full strength available the shield most certainly would change hands. This belief was strengthened by Napier's win in points at the centre championships at Gisborne early in February. In the Gisborne team were a number of competitors who were hardily out of the novice stage, but they 'performed very well indeed, and a number of useful points were collected in third places. The ground conditions were not ot the best. As a. result of the continued wet weather, it had been impossible to have the grass cut as short as the athletes would have liked. Ihe heavy rain overnight made the track heavy, and although no rain fell during the progress of the meeting runners wore handicapped' along the back stretch by a strong wind. Jumpers wore also jumping into the wind, and for the pole vault the gale was so strong that the bar had to be held m j position. No records were broken.
In the pole vault and high jump, Gisborne was unfortunate. L. Grey tied for first place in both these events with Napier men, but in the jump-off Napier secured the win. Kaua was in form in the broad jump and the hop, step and jump. Morrison, a prominent Canterbury performer who had expected to appear in Gisborne on Friday night, jumped in both these events for exhibition purposes onlv. In the hop, step and umpj Kami's best distance was Sin. bolter than Morrison's, while the Canterbury man did' only 2in. better than Kaua in the broad jump.
A dance was given in honor of the visitors, and during the evening Mr N A McKenzie, chairman ot tin hawke's Bay centre's committee, presented the shield to Mr W. M. Wildish, manager of the Gisborne team, congratulating him on Gisborne's success. Mr McKenzie aso presented championship certificate* won at the centre championships at Gisborne on February 2.
