HIGHWAY IMPROVEMENT
PROPOSED DEVIATIONS A.A. OFFICERS’ TOUR INSPECTION AT WAIKOHU The proposals of the Gisborne advisory committee of the Automobile Association, Auckland, for the improvement of the main north highway in the vicinity of Waikohu were investigated by the party of headquarters officers of tffe association yesterday en route to Gisborne for the annual meeting of local members, to be held this evening. The visiting party comprises Mr. A. Grayson, president of the association, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, secretary, and Mr. M. 11. Wynyard, motorists' representative on the Main Highways Board, and several members ot tlio council of the association.
The visitors were met at. the bridge at Hutchinson’s early yesterday afternoon by Mr. F. Tolerton, chairman of the Gisborne committee, and Messrs. H. F. Forster, N. H. Bull, and E. Swinnerton, members of the committee, and Mr. G. Crawshaw, the Gisborne agent. The district engineer, Mr. 0. G. Thornton, and Mr. A. G. Liyas, Waikoliu County engineer, also accompanied the party, and their interest was welcomed by. the association. The party discussed the question of replacing the narrow bridge at Hutchinson's, and also investigated the proposal to deviate the main highway at “Lome” so as to eliminate three existing railway crossings, and another proposed deviation at Waikohu to obviate the necessity of using the present combined road and railway bridge. Other proposed improvements to the main north road were discussed, and the party then travelled along the Waimata Valley road to the bridge, to enable Mr. Wynyard and the other Auckland visitors to inspect the road. This morning the visitors, escorted again by members of the Gisborne ad - visory committee and district officials, travelled along the soutii road as far as the top of the Wharerata Hill, afid inspected the reconstruction work ncs\v in progress, and also discussed proposals for additional improvements. This afternoon they were to have visited the Gentle Annie and Harris’ Hill reconstruction works on the alternative southern route, via Tiniroto, and are to return to town for the annual meeting this evening.
