A remarkable escape from serious injury was experienced by more than 20 people when a motor bus in which they were riding left the Toad and capsized down a bank near Mairanga Bay on Saturday afternoon. The occupants were imprisoned inside the bus, standing or lying on piles of broken glass and with imminent danger of some 20 gallons of x’ctrol bursting into flames until a back window was smashed and they were assisted 'out one by one. Only one passengerf was seriously hurt, Mrs. Alice 'Evelyn Jones, 30, who had an artery in the left wfist severed and was taken to the hospital. Among other occupants who received medical attention were Miss K. Ogilvie, who suffered concussion and her younger sister, who had cuts on the hands and one shoulder; Miss Woodlock, whose injuries included severe shock and abrasions to the .face; and Miss Edna Elliffe, who received extensive bruises. Several other people suffered from shock, bruises, abrasions and minor cuts. When climbing the hill the driver of the bus pulled over to the side to allow an overtaking motorist to pass. There is a bank about 'Bft. deep at the side of the road and without warning the edge crumbed away under the weight of the heavy bus, which rolled over the edge and down the bank. All the occupants were thrown from their seats, landing in a tangle on the broken windows. The bus was not damaged extensively, but most of the windows on the-left side were broken.
