GRADUATES' WORK

UNIVERSITY STANDARD ENGLISH EXAMINERS' PRAISE Laudatory comment on. the standard attained in some subjects has been made by the English examiners for the New Zealand University M.A. degree in their report on the examinations held at the end of 1933, presented to the senate last week.

The report on the language paper in tho special honors school in English read :

"It is again possible to state that this year, as last year, the standard of work "in English language in the New Zealand honors school of English is at least equal to the standard prevalent in most British universities. In the view of the present examiner the New Zealand standard this year is probably superior to that of any British university except Oxford "New Zealand language work falls below that of the linguistic specialists at Oxford, but is superior to that of the literary specialists. .Moreover, the restriction of honors to first and secondclass in New Zealand prevents the. honors work from descending to the low level that it readies in all our British universities."

Although equal praise was not given to the work in any other subject, except perhaps in a reference to the seven candidates who obtained honors in education as being "a credit to their university," the. perieral tenor of all the reports was complimentary, with criticism in some instances.
