(Herald Correspondent.) Sir. A. E. Hamilton, who came am from Gloucestershire, '.England, <is a child, is now engaged in walking round New Zealand in order to demonstrate the value of Mew Zealand's secondary industries, to lecture ou scenic resorts, while studying in his spare time several languages, but always working when lie is iii need of money. Ho has lectured at many schools, and as the school in Matawai was closed, held a meeting in the Stadium ou Saturday evening, to address all interested. .Mr. Hamilton carries photographs of the places visited and an autograph book signed by prominent people in the cities and towns visited on his tour. He also had samples of wool in its varied stages of manufacture from the raw article to a finished cardigan. Mr. 11. Wilson acted as chairman. Mr. Hamilton explained his aim, saying that he wished to see tor himself the conditions of life m the different countries and districts visited, and to pass on his information to the people and children of other districts and so lead a useful life. He intends visiting Australia when his walking tour of New Zealand is over. After the address, several questions were satisfactorily answered. On the motion of the chairman, Mr. Hamilton was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. He left Matawai on Monday afternoon on a visit to Moanui, and proceeds to Opotiki on foot to-day.

The Matawai Dog Trial Club holds its annual meeting on Saturday evening in the Public Hall, when a large attendance is anticipated.

Mr. D. A. Smith, M.A., New Plymouth, who spent a week as the guest of Mr. A. J. Gibson at his home in Matawai, left for Auckland on Saturday to take up a position at the Dilworth College. Mr. Gibson also returned to duty at Mt, Albert Grammar School, and Miss A. A. Gibson leftMatawai ou Monday to take up her duties on the staff of Te Karaka School. —Mrs 11. J. Fleming, Gisborne, and her daughter, Miss M. Fleming, were visitors to Matawai last week for the Mortleman-Fielder wedding. Master Ken Fleming returned on Saturday from Otaki health camp, much benefited from the change.—Mr. and Mrs. F. G. Bellerby and family (returned home on Friday.—Mr. ami Mrs. H. Bulst and family left on Monday evening for Opotiki, en route to Te Kaha on a short holiday.—Mrs. F. 0. Briant and family returned from Gisborne last week.—Master Eric Pederscn, last year's dux of the Matawai School, is now a pupil of the Wellington Boys' College. —Mr. R. Boyd, Ngaio, Wellington, has been spending a few weeks' holiday in Matawai as the guest of his sister, Mrs. C. "P. Pedersen.—Miss It. Waudhop, Gisborne, has returned to her school duties at Matawai.—Mr. and Mrs. A. Mortleman, Makauri, and Mrs. Stevens, Gisborne, were visitors to Matawai last WC ek.—Master Bob Hannah, who spent his school vacation with Mrs. R. S. Caulton, returned to Napier last week. —Mr. and Mrs. Duff, late of Whalatutu, have taken up their residence at the sdioolhouse, Matawai. The rainfall for Koranga for January totalled 4.56 in. Pain fell on .seven days, the maximum fall being 1.54 in. on' January 2. Bush fires have been raging through the back country at Moanui, fallen trees blocking the road and interfering witli the telephone service. Matawai township has missed several of the heavy thunder showers which were experienced a few miles out. Several people have been obliged to cart water for their homes and business premises. The gardens are exceedingly dry, and fears are expressed that there

will be fewer flowers for'the, Matawai Flower Show. In order to make final arrangements, a meeting is called for to-night.
