JUNGLE MURDER
INDIAN POLICE OFFICER
NATIVE SERVANT arrelted
CALCUTTA, Dec. 29. Andrew George Crawford, police superintendent of Alirzapur, United Provinces, was shot dead while asleep in the remote jungle at Hatbinaln, near the Sone River. Air. Crawford’s personal Moslem servant has been arrested. The motive of the crime is uncertain, but it is understood that the servant was reprimanded for neglect of duty.. The crime was committed with Air. Crawford's rifle, the muzzle being pressed against his chest. Air. Crawford had been hunting in the district for several weeks. He had pitched camp for Christmas near Hathinala, and the body had to be carried 36 miles through narrow jungle paths to the nearest town. Air. Crawford was 47 years of age. He had been in the Indian police service since 1907, and had been stationed for four years at Alirzapur, where he was popular. He was instrumental in ridding the district of armed brigands. He was unmarried, but leaves a widowed mother in England.
