DEAD TOHEROAS
KILLED BY SNAPPER ?
Along the west coast 'beaches nt present are many hundreds of tolieroas, do,ad or dying, states a Dargaville message. Varying theories are advanced to account; for the mortality. Tolieroas examined had their suckers bitten off, and it is thought that during the series of easterly gales, when west coast waters were particularly smooth and free from breakers, big snapper came right into the toheroa beds in quantities and hit out the suckers. Large snapper and mullet have been particularly plentiful at the coast through the holidays, and fishermen have hail big hauls. The tolieroas also are, -particularly plentiful, and in splendid condition. Fortunately, it is hot everywhere along the beach that mortality is noticeable.
