GIFTS TO ROYALTY

RETURNED TO DONORS COURT ETIQUETTE RULE LONDON, Dec. 8. Numbers of wedding presents sent to the Duke and Duchess of Kent by unknown well-wishers in various parts of the -Empire are now being packed up and returned to the donors. This is because the givers were unaware of one of the strictest rules of Royal etiquette. No one may make a present to a member of .the Royal Family unless Royalty first “graciously .accepts” the gift. Therefore only personal friends of the Duke ami Princess Marina were allowed to give them wedding presents. An exception was made in the case of public bodies, which made gifts on behalf of their members. • - But all individual presents have to ,be returned, with a note of regret explaining the Court rule. Among the returned gifts are several pairs of silk stockings sent to the Princess and a teaeloth embroidered by an old lady in Canada. ‘Meanwhile the Royal couple are enjoying the first privacy since their engagement was announced. This is not because their Staffordshire retreat is impenetrably fenced against reporters. It is in- deference to the personal request of the King. ■ His Majesty asked the press, once the wedding was over, to respect, the privacy of the young couple and not - 1 i report their daily doings. His vi. !i is being loyally observed.
