EUROPEAN POWERS

(To tlw Editor of tlio Herald.) • Sir,—l was greatly interested in your leader of January 5 on “A European Pact.” You state: “The importance of the efforts to negotiate an agreement between central and southern European Powers can hardly be exaggerated . . • to conclude a pact and avert a catastrophe . . . The ultimate sequel could 'quite reasonably be the formation of a strong central European group. . . With a strong . tand adopted by Franco and Italy, there is every prospect that the smaller States will fall into line. Germany’s signature, however, is not essential to a pact between the other countries . . . and it is because a pact such ns that suggested offers some hope of a lasting peace that the present negotiations are neing watched with such interest-.”

I must congratulate you on putting matters in such a clear light, however long that peace may last. Scripture clearly foretells that within the bounds of the old Roman Empire (that is, south of the Rhine r-nd Danube, with the exception of Rumania, which was always iff the old Roman Empire) there shall be ten confederated kingdoms that will endeavor to maintain the peace of Europe, and as you r.ave already stated that to form such a pact the signature of Germany is not necessary. Germany is north of the Rhine and Danube; therefore is not- included in the ten-horned kingdoms of Scripture. Let us consider the alliances that are already formed. On the west we have Britain, France, and Italy, end on the east are Rumania, Bulgaria, Jugoslavia, Greece, and Turkey. That the East and West are sympathetic towards each other has been manifested -first by their attitude towards Hungary, and now towards Austria. bet fie East and the West amalgamate—and there appears nothing to hinder them from doing so—then it only requires two more States to cast in thenlot with them, and there is the ten-toed, ten-horned kingdom which was foretold by Daniel 2(CO years ago. Furthermore, if those ten - kingdoms were formed, it would throw Germany and Russia together, which must take place in the latter days, ,t.s foretold in Ezekiel 38— ■Gog and Magog. Add to this the repeated persecutions of the Jews, which is hunting tl m to Palestine, and can anyone deny that the -‘Times of the Gentiles” are ,"limit fulfilled? It was stated to Daniel to ‘‘shut- up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end : many shall run to and fro-, and knowledge shall he increased—but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand.” “Tn the latter days ye shall consider it perfectly.”— Yours, etc., I-lISTORTCUS.
