DUTY ON SPIRITS

REMISSION WANTED

AGITATION IN BRITAIN

LONDON, Jan. 5.

Whisky manufacturers and barley growers are renewing their endeavors 'to obtain some remission of the heavy excise duty on spirits.

They point out that excise receipts continue to fall, the net customs excise receipts for spirit duties in the financial year 11)33-34 amounting to £33,452,805. compared with £51,(153.608 in 1024-25.

Tt is suggested that with a lower duty consumption would increase, and that, a reduction sufficient, to permit whisky to be retailed at 10s a Untile, instead of as at present, 12s (id a bottle, would bring considerably larger soles.
