FOUR MAORIS KILLED
ANOTHER IN HOSPITAL
WAIROA MOTOR SMASH
COLLISION WITH LORRY

WAIROA, this day. Four Maoris are dead and another is in hospital as a result of a motor collision on the main Napier road six miles from Wairoa. All are of Hie one family, residing at Mohaka. The victims are : —Dead — Walter Watson. 48 years. James Watson, 17 years, son of Walter Watson. Tangi Watson, 12 years, daughter of Walter Watson. Caroline Watson, 15 months, (laughter of Walter Watson. —ln Hospital— Julia Watson, baby daughter of Walter Watson. This i> the most serious motor accident in the history of Wairoa. It occurred at about noon on Saturday, when the car containing the Maori family was being driven by James Watson from Mohaka to Wairoa. When rounding a bend nt Mr. A. McKinnon's station, the car collided wtih a lorry owned by the Napier-Wairoa-Gisborne Transport Service, and driven by Mr. George L. Franklin. When the driver of the car saw the lorry, he swerved to one side, and the lorry struck the car on the side.
Three deaths occurred almost instantaneously, and Janies Watson ’and the baby were taken to hospital, the lormer succumbing yesterday to his injuries.
Tiie car was badly damaged on its right side, but the lorry suffered little and was able to resume its journey to Napier. On the accident being reported by the driver to the police. Sergeant McGregor and Constable Me Alpine, together with Dr. Halhvi'ighf, to the spot.. B The inquest was opened at the pdf BT station before Mr. V. E. Winter, J.l* district coroner. Sergeant McGregor conducted the proceedings, and Mr. T. W. Hercock, manager of the Napier-Wairoa-Gisborne Transport Service, and Mr. 11. R. Bisley, insurance adjuster, wore also in attendance. The only evidence taken was that of Caroline Watson, wife of the deceased, Walter Watson, who identified Hie bodies of those killed.
The inquest- was then adjourned sine die, and the coroner later proceeded to view the scene of the accident. The bodies are to be interred at Te Reinga, the victims belonging to the Ngatihinehika tribe.
The baby victim is reported to ho doing well.
