McCLUSKIEGUNGE
ANGLO-INDIAN SETTLEMENT
HOME FOR SOCIETY
CALCUTTA, Nov. Lapra, in the Ranchi district, till recently a deserted area, is now an established settlement with the name of McCluskiegunge. The change was made at the week-end, when with much ceremony, religious and' secular, the place was inaugurated as a settlement for Anglo-Indians under the auspices of the Colonisation Society of .India, of which Mr. E. T. McCluskie, one of the two representatives of the Anglo-Indian community in the Bengal Legislative Council, has been the moving spirit.
The object of the society is to give Anglo-Indians an abiding home of their own, where they can live in selfdependence and self-sufficiency. In the words of one speaker: “Wc get a stake in the country, and thereby become Indians proper while still retaining our identity as Anglo-Indians.” The settlement is in healthy undulating country, fertile and adequately watered, and served by the railway. Tr covers 10.000 acres, of which some 4000 have already been taken up by GG settlers, who are building their cwn houses.
