CRICKET IN GISBORNE

A BATSMAN’S WICKET TWO CENTURIES SCORED ROCKETT AND ROBERTSON It was a batsman’s wicket on Saturday afternoon when the Poverty Bay Cricket Association commenced the fifth of the senes of first round games. The showers during the holidays had left the wickets in perfect order, and bowlers had a difficult task. Two centuries were scored: G. N. Lockett (Old Boys) was in particularly good form, and knocked up ISS. G. J. Robertson (Whataupoko) scored 138. hr. Sharp (High School) was the most successful bowler, and took eight Turanganui wickets at an average of just over eight runs per wicket. In each of the games high scores were put up. LOCKETT IN FORM

OLD BOYS HEAD SERVICE

Mainly due to G. N. Lockett, who was in fine form, Old Boys had Civil Service chasing the ball for the greater part of Saturday afternoon, and put on 283 for the loss of seven wickets, at which stage the innings was declared' closed. Civil Service at stumps had scored 27 for one wicket down.

• The .Old Boys’ innings opened without promise, and two wickets were down for 36 runs. Then Clifton and Lockett entered into partnership, commencing cautiously to the bowling of James and Boon. Clifton was careful throughout, and his 41 included only two boundaries. Lockett, however, was more aggressive, and the score mounted quickly. After the partnership had added 92 and with the score at 328, Clifton was dismissed. T. Bright, who came in next, was content to let Lockett do the scoring, and in a partnership of 75 lie contributed only 13. Likewise Quaylc, who also scored 13, in a partnership of 71. gave Lockett all the bowling. Lockett fell a prey to Griffiths when the score was at 281, which included no less than 10 sixes and 18 fours, or 132 runs from boundary hits. Scores: — OLD BOYS. First Innings. WHATAUPOKO’S BIG SCORE

CITY’S DIPFICULT TASK City will have a difficult task next, Saturday to avoid a defeat. Whataupoko compiled 273, and at stumps City has lost, one wicket for 25 runs. Whataupoko’s first, wicket fell at 26. A Dow. who was partnered by G. ,T. Robertson, had made 14 of this total, the result of a forceful innings, which included three fours off M. Robinson’s first over. Robertson bit Fraser for a four with the first ball of the match and another with the first ball of his second over, but after the loss of Dow Robertson proceeded more cautiously for a time, and with R. Aisiabie, who scored 32, the pair raised the score to 308, the partnership yielding 82. Another good partnership was between Robertson and Niven. Hie latter, coming on at third wicket, down, helping to Taise the score from 123 to 205, also an addition of 82. Thirty-seven more runs were added with Bignall in partnership, and Robcrston succumbed to Fraser as seventh wicket down, at 261. Robertson ’s 138 included oue six and 11 fours. Fraser was the most successful bowler, taking five wickets for 77 runs in 21 overs. Somervell, behind the wickets, caught four of the batsmen and stumped one. City made an unpromising start, the first wicket falling without the score sheet being opened. At stumps, there had been no further loss. M. Marists are in a very sound position at the expense of Gisborne Club, who have made a bad start in their first innings. A good total of 239 was made by Marist, after an indifferent start, two wickets being down for four runs and four wickets for 47. At this stage, however, Hallamore and Lloyd lie - came partners, and they raised the score to 107. Hallamore’s 64 included seven fours and Lloyd’s 36 included two sixes ami three fours. A sound “tail” look the score to 239, MeLachlan being undefeated at 77, including six sixers and six fours. Caulton and Blathwayt shared the wickets.

Gisborne Club began badly, losing three wickets for 3-i runs, and four for 65. Caulton was batting freely, and was still in with 37 runs against him name, including six fours. Scores: MARIST First innings.

TURANGANUI V. SCHOOL

ONE GOOD PARTNERSHIP

One particularly good partnership saved the situation for Turanganui, who finished with the fair total of 178 runs, to which High School had replied at stumps with 36 for the loss of two wickets.

Turanganui started very badly indeed, and three wickets were down with only nine runs scored. B. Scholium and A. Wilson, however, stopped the rot, and the pair added 135, the best partnership of the day on the Oval. With his score at 65, Wilson returned a ball to Sharp. Wilson’s total included seven fours. Scholium’s 78 included one six and seven fours. Sharp did most of the bowling, and took eight of the wickets for 68 runs.

FI aveil and Stephenson, who opened for High School, took the total to 30 before they were separated, and at stumps there were two wickets down for 36 runs. Scores:—

UNEMPLOYED BEAT SCHOOL

Unemployed Workers’ Movement defeated High School A by eight wickets. School batted first and scored 39 runs, Short making 17. Moore took three wickets for 22 runs and Smythe four for 13. Unemployed replied with 66, Smythe making 10 and P. Green 18. Marshbanks took seven wickets for 25, and Short three for 39. School in their second strike made 47, Marshbanks scoring 18 and Kermodc 11. Smythe took live wickets for 20 runs. Unemployed made 30 for Iwo wickets in the second innings, 13oag scoring 11.

Barbados, in their first innings against M.C.C., made 177.—Carew 68, Bycr not out 47. Iddon took four wickets for 14 and Leyland four for 54. In their second innings they lost one for 8. The match was drawn. Bain interfered with play and the wicket was sticky.
